The European Environment Committee recently voted in favour of a proposed amendment to the EU Circular Economy Package, this could see the recycling target increase to 70% by 2030.
The current legislation requires member states to recycle 50% of waste by 2020. The 70% rate has been described by some member sates as unachievable, so the European Commission has instead put forward a proposed target of 65%.
The aim is to phase out the use of landfill for dealing with waste by increasing the reuse, recycling, composting and incineration of waste and by placing an increased responsibility on suppliers / producers to look at the packaging used in their products.
There may be a separate focus on waste streams that handle furniture, fabrics and electrical equipment.
Malta have recently taken over the Presidency of the EU and their Minister for Environment, José Herrera, said: “The Maltese Presidency is prioritising the waste legislative proposals. We are now working with Member States to advancing in balanced compromises on some of the main issues, such as key definitions, targets and calculation rules, as well as extended producer responsibility.”
Higher Recycling Targets May be Coming
